Two Questions That Change Everything
A Simply Great Insight
Two Questions That Change Everything
Most principals wait too long to start listening tours. And at good schools, it’s usually for a good reason: they’re out in the field coaching like crazy, setting a high bar for student culture.
But in the push for excellence, they sometimes forget to pause and ask the people whose opinion matters most: their staff.
10 minutes and 2 simple questions:
1. What am I doing well as your principal?
2. What's one thing I could do differently that would help improve your experience here?
Now imagine a principal before the end of October sitting down with every staff member, asking those two questions, pulling together the themes, and saying back to the team:
"Here’s what I heard."
"Here’s what I’m going to get better at this week."
"Hold me to it."
Who wouldn’t want to work for a leader like that?
After all, if we expect teachers to take feedback to get better at teaching, we better take feedback to get better at leading.
In our last newsletter, we asked you which routines you were most focused on right now at school. Leadership routines was the most popular response.
As promised, below is a free resource to help you launch 10-minute listening tours, ask the right two questions, and share back what you’ll improve.

What's Most Important Right Now?
Academic Routines
Start of Class
Is learning starting right away?
Are there consistent routines to get students set up with the materials they need?
Independent Work
Are students clear on the expectations during work time?
Is the teacher circulating, holding students accountable, and providing feedback?
End of Class
Are students leaving knowing the one big thing they learned that day?
Are teachers collecting evidence that shows them who got it and who didn’t?
